History of SAP

SAP stands for Systems Applications and Products. 

History

SAP AG was founded in 1972 by 5 IBM engineers

SAP R/1

In 1973, the first version of SAP, which is SAP R/1 got released. 

R stands for Real time data Processing

R/1 means that SAP consisted of one tier

Financial and MM modules where released in this initial version 

SAP R/2

In 1979, second major version of SAP, which is SAP R/2 got released. 

R/2 means that SAP consisted of two tiers – Frontend and Backend. This version was based on Mainframe. 

In this version, many modules where released including 

  • Finance
  • Controlling 
  • MM
  • Inventory Management
  • Production Planning
  • Quality Management
  • Plant maintenance
  • Sales and Distribution

SAP R/3

In 1992, third major version of SAP, which is SAP R/3 got released. 

R/3 means SAP consisted of 3 tiers:

  • Presentation tier, 
  • Application tier and 
  • DB tier. 

Between 1992 to 2004, almost 4 versions of SAP R/3 Enterprise Edition got released (SAP R/3 1.0 to SAP R/3 4.0). Versoin 4.0 was based on Client Server architecture. 

In 2004, a next version SAP R/3 5.0 was released with a different Architecture called ECC (Enterprise Central Component) based on Netweaver platform. 

In 2005, SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 got released. 

From 2006 onwards, SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 got released with an Enhancement Package 1

Following the Enhancement package 1, further versions of Enhancement package got released as follows: 

  • SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 Enhancement Package 1 in 2006
  • SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 Enhancement Package 2 in 2007
  • SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 Enhancement Package 3 in 2007
  • SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 Enhancement Package 4 in 2008
  • SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 Enhancement Package 5 in 2010
  • SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 Enhancement Package 6 in 2011
  • SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 Enhancement Package 7 in 2013
  • SAP R/3 ECC 6.0 Enhancement Package 8 in 2016

In 2007, SAP launched Business Suite that includes ECC as ERP with other systems as follows:

  • ERP ECC 6.0 EHP 2 
  • CRM – Customer Relationship Management
  • SRM – Supplier Relationship Management
  • SCM – Supply Chain Management
  • PLM

In 2009, next version of Business Suite Version 7.0 got released. Since the previous version that included ECC 6.0 was termed as 6.0, the next version got released with version 7.0.

  • CRM 7.0
  • SRM 7.0
  • SCM 7.0
  • PLM

Further versions of Business Suite started including Enhancement Packages for other modules as well. 

For example, In 2016, Business Suite Version 7.0 got released as Business Suite Version 7.0 Innovations 2016
